Test Format and scoring pattern

Test Format (Structure/ Duration):

  • The Listening Module is the first part of the exam.
  • It takes approximately 30 minutes and consists of 4 parts.
  • There are 10 questions in each section.
  • You are given time to read the questions before you listen.
  • You listen only once, while you listen you can note your answers on the question paper.
  • You have 10 minutes time to transfer your answers onto the exam answer sheet. This is only applicable for Paper-based Tests.

The IELTS Listening component consists of four parts:

  • PART 1: The recording is of a conversation between two speakers in an everyday social situation.
  • PART 2: The recording is of a monologue in an everyday social situation.
  • PART 3: The recording is of a conversation between two to four people in an educational or training situation.
  • PART 4: The recording is of a monologue on an academic subject.

A variety of tasks are used chosen from the following types: multiple-choice; short answer questions; sentence completion; notes/summary/diagram/flowchart/table completion; labeling a diagram; classification and matching.

Scoring Pattern (Band Chart):

For the listening test, which contains 40 questions, the approximate band scores can be calculated using this table.
